Andropause: Understanding Male Hormone Decline

Testosterone falls by about 1% per year after age 30. Whether that matters depends on symptoms — not the number alone.

What andropause actually is

Andropause is not a sudden event like menopause; it is a gradual decline in testosterone starting in the 30s and 40s. Only a subset of men develop symptomatic late-onset hypogonadism — the pattern that warrants investigation and, sometimes, treatment.

Symptoms vs normal aging

Overlap is real. Low libido, morning erection loss, marked fatigue, loss of muscle despite training, mood changes, and central weight gain in your 40s or 50s deserve investigation. Sleep apnea, chronic stress, alcohol, and metabolic syndrome all suppress testosterone and should be addressed first.

Frequently asked questions

Is TRT the only fix?+

No — addressing sleep, weight, stress, and alcohol restores testosterone in many men without medication.

What age should I test?+

When symptoms appear, not by age alone. Testing without symptoms rarely helps.
