Blood Test Turnaround Times: When to Expect Your Results
Common panels return in 24–72 hours; specialty hormones can take a week. Here is a realistic timeline by test.
Same-day and 24-hour panels
Basic chemistry (glucose, sodium, potassium, creatinine), CBC with differential, INR and PTT, and urinalysis usually return within 24 hours from the reference laboratory. For urgent point-of-care tests, some can be done in-clinic in minutes — see blood glucose test.
48–72 hour panels
Complete metabolic panel, lipid profile, HbA1c, TSH, ferritin, vitamin B12, liver function, and inflammatory markers (hs-CRP) typically arrive within two to three business days. Most annual assessment panels fall in this window.
Specialty and 5–10 day panels
Sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol, LH, FSH, SHBG, prolactin), cortisol, DHEA-S, ApoB, vitamin D, celiac serology, autoantibodies, and allergen-specific IgE testing are often batched and take 5–7 business days. Genetic and highly specialized send-outs can take 2–4 weeks.
Why results are sometimes delayed
Common reasons: sample haemolysis or clotting requiring a redraw, additional confirmatory testing triggered by an abnormal value, missing clinical information the laboratory needs to interpret an assay, or a courier delay from a remote clinic.
