Hormone Therapy in Quebec: A Complete Overview
Modern hormone therapy is safer, better targeted, and more accessible than a generation ago. Here is what Quebec adults need to know.
What hormone therapy is today
Hormone therapy replaces or supplements hormones that have declined below optimal levels — most commonly estrogen and progesterone in perimenopause and menopause, and testosterone in men (and selected women) with symptomatic deficiency.
Modern practice is guided by the 2022 NAMS and 2023 Menopause Society position statements: therapy is initiated in symptomatic patients, individualized by risk, monitored closely, and continued for as long as benefits outweigh risks — not stopped arbitrarily at a fixed age.
Who benefits most
Women aged 45–60 with vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats), genitourinary symptoms, mood or sleep disturbance, or early menopause. Men over 40 with confirmed low testosterone and symptoms (fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, mood changes).
Absolute contraindications are limited: active hormone-sensitive cancer, active thromboembolic disease, and pregnancy. Most conditions labelled as contraindications a decade ago are now relative — decisions require an individualized risk conversation.
How to access hormone therapy privately
At CurAge Santé, hormone therapy begins with a 45-minute consultation, a full history and physical, and a targeted blood work requisition. A written plan follows the results review, and follow-ups are typically at 6–8 weeks, 3 months, then annually.
You do not need a family doctor referral. See Hormonal Health & Well-Being for the full service list.
