Virtual Care vs In-Person Visits: When Each Actually Works

Telemedicine is excellent for some visits and inadequate for others. Here's a straight guide to when each is appropriate.

What virtual works great for

Prescription renewals for a stable chronic condition.

Follow-up on labs or imaging that have already been done.

Hormone therapy check-ins after the initial in-person assessment.

Mental health consultations.

Minor illness triage (respiratory symptoms, mild GI, common questions).

Travel medicine consultations that don't require vaccination that same visit.

What genuinely requires in-person care

Any first visit that includes a physical exam (abdominal, gynaecological, dermatological, joint).

Blood collection, vaccination, and injections.

Ear cleaning or ear irrigation.

Suspected acute conditions that need vital signs and hands-on assessment (chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache — most of these should go to an ER).

Any procedure — skin tag removal, minor wound care.

Frequently asked questions

Is a virtual visit legally the same as an in-person visit?+

Yes. Prescriptions, notes, requisitions and referrals issued during a virtual visit are as valid as in-person ones.
