Weight Loss Plateaus: Why They Happen and What Actually Works

Every weight loss journey has plateaus. Here is why they happen and what tools genuinely help.

Why plateaus happen

As body weight decreases, energy needs drop and hunger hormones (ghrelin, GLP-1, leptin) shift to defend the previous set point. This is metabolic adaptation — a survival mechanism, not a lack of willpower. Most people plateau after 4–6% of body weight loss without medication and after 12–15% with GLP-1 therapy.

Strategies that actually work

Increase protein to 1.4–1.6 g/kg to preserve lean mass and thermic effect.

Add or intensify resistance training 2–3 times per week.

Reassess sleep — under 6 hours nearly always stalls progress.

On GLP-1, consider dose escalation or a class switch (semaglutide → tirzepatide).

Rule out under-recognized drivers: hypothyroidism, PCOS, sleep apnea, medications that promote weight gain.

Frequently asked questions

Is a plateau the natural stopping point?+

Sometimes. Many patients reach a healthy, sustainable weight at a plateau. Others benefit from intensification if health goals are not yet met.
