Ozempic vs Wegovy: What Quebec Patients Should Know

Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide but they are not interchangeable. Here is how they differ in practice.

Same molecule, different labels

Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide. Ozempic is approved by Health Canada for type 2 diabetes and dosed to 2 mg weekly; Wegovy is approved specifically for weight management and titrates to 2.4 mg weekly. The 0.4 mg difference matters clinically — the higher dose was designed and studied for maximal weight loss.

Practical differences

Availability, insurance coverage, and cost differ. Ozempic is often more available and sometimes covered when a diabetes indication exists. Wegovy availability in Canada has improved since 2024 but supply and reimbursement remain uneven — your clinician will check both routes for you at the initial consultation.

Off-label use of Ozempic for weight loss is common in Canada and clinically reasonable, but insurance rarely covers it in that scenario. We discuss the actual monthly cost of each option transparently before starting.
